ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers, is the premier international body in the HVAC&R field and has more than 50000 members in over 100 countries today. The mission of ASHRAE is to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and related human factors to serve the evolving needs of the public and ASHRAE members. It is the foremost and authoritative source of technical and educational information, standards and guidelines.
ASHRAE India Chapter (AIC) is the first and oldest (1990) of the three ASHRAE Chapters in the country. It has more than 140 ASHRAE members located in North and Eastern India.
The three Indian chapters belong to Region-At-Large (RAL), the largest of the 14 regions of ASHRAE. RAL was formed in 2001 and contains individual members and chapters in Europe, Africa, Middle East and the Indian Sub-Continent. The RAL is divided into three Sub-Regions A, B, and C each headed by a sub regional chair (SRC). The India Chapter belongs to Sub-Region A.

- India Chapter chartered by ASHRAE President David Butler in March 1990.
- Sukhdev Mathaudu, DRC Region X, visits AIC in April 1994.
- ISHRAE becomes ‘International Associate’ of ASHRAE in June 1994.
- President Billy Manning inaugurates ACREX – 95 in New Delhi in March 1995.
- Western India Chapter chartered by President Richard B. Hayter in April 1996 in Ahmedabad.
- South India Chapter chartered by President H.W. Goodman Jr. in Nov. 1999 in Bangalore.
- ACREX-2000 in New Delhi in Jan 2000.
- New Student Branch at YMCA Institute of engineering at Faridabad.
- AIC reports the highest Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE) points in June 2001.
- Weather Data Project completed and CD released.
- AIC becomes part of RAL in 2001.
- Ashok Virmani, past president AIC, becomes RAL’s Nominating Committee member.
- MM Pande, Fellow, receives the Lincoln Boullion Award 2004 for membership promotion.
- AIC hosts the Third RAL ARC in New Delhi in Sept. 2004. President Ron Vallort along with many other Society Officers attend.
- First AIC delegation visits Lahore HVAC Expo as guests of ASHRAE Pakistan Chapter in March 2005.
- AIC members visit China Refrigeration Show in Beijing as guests of the Chinese Association of Refrigeration in April 2005.
